Two of Reno's "Unlimited Air Racing" giants going toe 2 toe for the top qualifying spot of 2004, Dago only beating the Bear out by .788 mph at 490.821 mph!! 2004 was a crazy weather year where you were getting beatdown by the sun early in the week, to some snow on the mountains around the airport by race day on Sunday. Like they say in Reno, if you don't like the weather, wait an hour. *Bonus d...

Reno 2004 "Big Bossman" Practice and Qualifying

Mike Brown brought his beautiful Grumman F7F-3P Tigercat back to Reno for 2004 and posted a well respected 363 mph qualifying speed. Also, later in the week during qualifying, Brian Sanders was preparing for an afternoon flight when unfortunately the right main wheel failed on him as he was turning into the run-up area. Included in the video is the wheel change and taxi back to the ramp with a ...

😮スピナーでかい。
空冷エンジンサイコー!
Nice sound
I love that you’re still doing this - I last year was my first time and despite how it ended I’m so glad I went. It may not have had some of the big names but I’m eternally grateful to you for preserving these priceless videos. So, almost 20yr later…what was the story with Big Bossman’s exhaust?😮
@@ZacYatesThank you!! As for the exhaust, one of the clamps came off and the burned through. The only thing that kept it in the cowling was the exhaust door in the manual closet position. They welded it up and finished the race week with it, then Mike had a custom set made for both engines. The new exhaust had a tapered tip which increased back pressure for more power, and at the same time gave her that loud howl that she has to this day
@@Voodoo1650 how fascinating! Thanks for explaining - it looked a bit scary to my moderately-knowledgable eye!! I hope I get to see her fly one day and hear that note!
The sound of that prop is beautiful
Why not a Japanese pilot flying the Zero?
For safety reasons 😀
luvly one of the most beautiful planes i have ever seen.
8:07 ufff
Badass 💪👌
What is that vapor coming out of the empenage?
That vapor you’re seeing is steam dumping overboard from the boil off oil cooling system. The team sealed off the oil cooler and carburetor intakes that are normally in the leading edge of the wing to cut down on drag. There is a custom oil cooler that is submerged in a tank of coolant inside the rear of the fuselage, the heat is then boiled off into steam and dumped out the back.

That prop setup is sick!
P&Wとオリジナル栄では音が明らかに違うしカウルの径が違うな、オリジナルのカウルは本当に絶妙だな!!!
The sexiest unlimited racer of all time, bar none.

The fastest plane that has a Rolls-Royce Griffon engine.
Miss the BEAR so much… GOAT
Me too!!
The races still around? I know the big crash really put the kibosh on it RIP. Miss the days of the Valley of Speed.
Last year was the last year for the air races held in Reno. The Reno Air Racing Association has found a new location in Roswell New Mexico airrace.org/news/national-championship-air-races-take-off-for-roswell-nm-in-2025/
Very nice filming, I only wish you had a wider angle when you captured the missing man sequence. Nice to see all these planes, I liked the close filming during engine starts too.
Thank you
I wonder how the Bear would fly with one of those twisty C-130J props
I’ve often thought about that as well, and not just on the Bear. It would probably be a very good propeller, with very good results as long as they would be able to hold up to all the stress from engine vibrations etc. the C-130’s have smooth running turbines, and they probably don’t have to deal with all those stresses. Plus I think it would look cool as hell too.
Gorgeous
Почему мне завидно?
Tora tora ...
The p-51 mustang my favorite warbird
Is that new wing carbon fiber or just a modified Bearcat wing
It’s just a modified original wing, flaps sealed, leading edge intake ducts sealed, and outer wing panels/ailerons shortened, plus the bondo type stuff used to cover the wings to make them very slick
@@Voodoo1650 Okay Thanks.
Off to Roswell NM. Where the races will die for good.
I forgot what pilot it was but he said you know when the Bear was coming with that Thump, Thump, Thump sound
No merlin. Not a p51. Sorry not Sorry. It's cool. Just not a p51
Sea Fury is best.
Would, also, like to see these warbirds shring the skies over Reno at the air races....
Well, unfortunately the Reno races are no more, 2023 was the last year it was held there. They are currently looking for a new venue spot
Pushed the stick forward to keep it flying and got it on the ground real quick. Perfect! 👍🏻
Yanks have too much money .They should spread it around.
Amelia Earhart crossed the Atlantic in one of those : that plane is an icon, a treasure. Looks like the pilot had a lesser view than the passengers : Those windows are huge ! Would pay top dollar for a ride 👍
Bye bye to that engine 😢
The sickest sound ever recorded by any microphone
It was very crazy to hear in person !!
What a beast!
